Subject: MLIS Program Course Content

Hello,

My name is Noel Reich. I’m reaching out as part of the American Library Association’s Emerging Leaders Program. My group and I are working on a project for United for Libraries (check it out here: https://www.ala.org/united/).

As part of our project, we are compiling information on MLS/MLIS programs and what they offer with regards to education around trustee and board relationships, funding, and friends of library programs. Our end goal is to present research on what training MLIS/MLS programs are currently offering in this area, what the needs are as far as curriculum and content, and what

opportunities United for Libraries has to help provide this content.

I looked through your website, but I didn’t find all the information we’re gathering. If you have time, I would appreciate learning more about the following topics in your program:

  1. Have you heard of United for Libraries? If yes, how did you find out about them? Have you worked with them in the past? Please explain.

2.                    Are there any courses that teach about board/trustee relationships? If yes, please include the course name and description.

3.                   Are there any courses that discuss funding/fundraising using Friends of the Library groups? If yes, please include the course name and description.

4.                   Are there any courses that discuss the role of foundations? If yes, please include the course name and description.

5.                   Do you see a need for courses that discuss these topics? Please explain.

6.                   Is there student interest in these topics? Please explain.

This research will be presented at the American Library Association Annual Conference in June 2023. We hope to create tools that can be utilized by schools and students to best prepare students for their library careers.

Please let us know if you are willing to be contacted again to answer further questions. We appreciate your support and time!

If you have any questions about our project, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Best,

Noel
