Dear Colleagues: The GSLIS and the QC Writing Center (WC) jointly hosted a Curriculum Space on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, from 5:45 to 7:15. John Troynaski, QC WC Director, provided an inspiring overview on the importance of good writing for librarians, and of services available to students and faculty available from the Writing Center staff. Please consult their website at http://writingatqueens.qwriting.org/the-writing-center/ for more details. We particularly emphasize how useful their "Links" are for very useful websites to provide support for the writing process. Dr. Ping Li and I collaboratively prepared a detailed PPT, with examples, to highlight the more important and challenging aspects of the APA Style Manual (6th ed.), and to address essential components of APA Style that remain relatively constant. Our sincere thanks for the strong turnout (approximately 55 students and faculty), who asked excellent questions and engaged in a lively debate. These included both students in the core courses (who are currently required to use the 6th ed.), and more senior students. A number of these individuals noted that they found the presentation very helpful, even sometimes as they are in their final semesters. There have been numerous requests both from those who were present, and those who were unable to attend, to post the PPT. Please note that ALL courses will require use of the APA 6th edition as of Fall 2011. Dr. Li and I went through the PPT carefully (see attached) to correct a number of errors and omissions which came to our attention after the presentation. Please contact us if you notice any further errors. A special thanks to whomever suggested removing the PPT template to reduce file size. The resulting product is not particularly attractive, but the size differential (in KB instead of MB) is substantial. You are welcome to share this with others, but please be sure to credit Dr. Li and me as the authors. (Please note the Creative Commons License on slide 30). We spent far more time preparing this than ever anticipated, in hopes that it will make your own lives easier. In addition, we strongly urge you to consult the following resource for additional guidance: Purdue University Online Writing Lab. (2010, April 14). APA Overview and workshop.
