Subject: Course modality for Spring 2023

Dear Deans and Department Chairs:

With the Spring 2023 semester beginning next week, there are reports of faculty wishing to shift course modality. In all instances that have come to my attention, the desired change involves a face-to-face course shifting to a hybrid or fully online modality.

Please understand - and help your faculty to understand - that, for sound reasons, faculty may not decide on their own to shift the modality of a section from its approved modality. Students have registered for courses offered in specified modalities and it is incumbent on the institution to ensure that these commitments are kept. In addition, the current NYSED approval of our programs - with a handful of exceptions - does not include distance education at any significant scale.

Requests to change modality must route through the Department Chair, Dean, and Provost for explicit approval. A compelling pedagogical rationale must accompany such requests.

As a reminder, fully remote work authorized by an ADA accommodation is managed by HR, as is FMLA in the case of long-term illness. Faculty with short-term medical issues should work with their Chair to ensure appropriate coverage of their section(s).

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Patricia
