Definitely share. And, see if we can determine an agreed upon response before a student ask the question.
Oh gosh, this is important and the first I had even thought of it.
Let's share with the other 701 folks?
If anyone learns anything helpful, please share!

Claudia,
This sounds like an important discussion. Have anyone had to address citations from e-book readers due to lack of page numbers yet?

All, here is a response from the Digipres listserv.
(Next time I won't BCC).
Shawnta,
NISO is working on a standard for the exchange of annotations among reading systems, both among reading devices and web platforms. The project was just approved by the NISO members and we will be convening a working group soon.

Shawnta, discount..hmmm, sounds like a letter campaign led by NYBLC members. Include school/public librarians, lib students, lib orgs., & lib school deans which could help escalate a response from Kindle on the subject.
Food for thought.

You're welcome Phyllis.
I must say, I'm still rusty and a bit unclear, and definitely feel too premature to direct a patron.
I may have to cave in and purchase a kindle this year, if for no other reason, than to offer proper direction. Perhaps they should offer librarian and educator discounts!

Hello all,
At the public library, we've received lots of request for tutorials in e-readers and downloadable media. However, I'm pretty sure the question for how to cite will come up since essentially, these texts read without page numbers. It may be worth it to create lib-guides or how-tos on our citation pages for folks migrating to e-readers. I have a feeling people are going to ask us about citation in Kindles and other e-readers. A instructor friend of mine sent this to me, and so I thought I'd share.

vmanolova.ccny@gmail.comHello Professor Manolova,
I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to address a problem you had brought up when using the Kindle editions of books. Some of the books may not have the page numbers on neither the Kindle hardware (your actual e-reader) nor on the Kindle for PC. If purchased through Amazon, most of the time, you'll have page numbers. In the sad event that you do not have page numbers there are methods of citations. I have attached a PDF from Rio Salado College which uses the MLA method of citing from an e-book that doesn't have the actual page numbers in it. If in fact you're still against this method, there are formulas that are floating around the internet where you insert the book pages in total then the amount of locations in the e-book version and something usable comes out. Though, I highly doubt we're gonna have to do that since we're English majors who fear the word math--at least I do. I hope this helped you a bit and if you have any other questions please ask away.
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Pablo Vázquez
