Synopsis for 747, Fall 2011

 

This course is a broad survey of metadata standards for digital resources. Students are introduced to principles underlying the development and implementation of metadata schemes, evaluation of metadata standards for digital library environments, and related issues such as design strategies, discovery and harvesting, interoperability, and current research. Students will participate in hands-on application of these principles. 


Metadata standards covered in this course include Dublin Core, MARC, MODS, CDWA, VRA Core, EAD, ID3, and METS. This course aims to prepare students for administering metadata services for digitization programs, libraries, archives and repositories.



Bulletin Description

 

3 hr.; 3 cr. Introduction to some of the latest developments in information technology of immediate relevance to information professionals; hands-on laboratory experience of the systems selected. Units and contents may be changed from time to time to reflect new developments in the information arena.
