The Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College, City University of New York invites you to a reception to mark the publication of Dr. Johnathan Thayer’s book Citizenship, Subversion, and Surveillance in U.S. Ports: Sailors Ashore [Citizenship, Subversion, and Surveillance in U.S. Ports: Sailors Ashore | SpringerLink] Thursday, April 18 5:30pm President’s Conference Room 2 (RO-525) Fifth Floor, Benjamin Rosenthal Library Queens College Citizenship, Subversion, and Surveillance in U.S. Ports: Sailors Ashore The forces of industrialization that transformed ship technology simultaneously transformed the working-class lives of merchant seamen, intensifying class conflict and producing collective networks of subversion and resistance within the urban borderland spaces of sailortowns in which sailors fought to maintain control over their mobility, agency, and rights. Given their social, cultural, economic, geographic, and legal marginalization, merchant seamen have occupied essential roles at the parameters of US urban, legal, labor, immigration, and wartime history. The constellation of these histories, embedded in the encounters and negotiations that merchant seamen provoked along the nation’s coastlines and sailortowns, collectively represents a unique and essential perspective on the history of US citizenship. These arguments are advanced by Johnathan Thayer in his book Citizenship, Subversion, and Surveillance in U.S. Ports: Sailors Ashore, available in hardcover and ebook formats from Springer: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-45618-3 Dr. Johnathan Thayer is Assistant Professor at the Queens College Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, City University of New York (CUNY). He holds a PhD in History from the CUNY Graduate Center and an MLS from Queens College. He is a former Graduate Fellow in Labor Studies at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies and is a recipient of the E. P. Thompson Fellowship in United States History. Dr. Thayer is a maritime studies researcher and a public history and archival studies educator. His previous works include the co-edited volume Negotiating Masculinities and Modernity in the Maritime World, 1815-1940 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021). He has worked in maritime libraries and archives for more than twenty years and has sailed as a Voyager on the nineteenth-century whaleship Charles W. Morgan, as oral history interviewer on the liberty ship SS John W. Brown, and as Ship’s Librarian on SUNY Maritime’s training ship Empire State VI. After January’s budget decisions, we made some adjustments to our supports for instruction (e. g. reducing ENGL 110 sessions) and subjects/resources because we remain short of subject librarians. But, I'm glad to report that most of our public services have continued as they were from the Fall, due to the continued support of our Provost and Dean. The additional good news is that we have received CUNY Library Services tax-levy funds to purchase materials for Course Reserves and Permanent Reserves. We must use these funds in this FY24. The CUNY Textbook Initiative ($25K) is to purchase physical books – a CUNY ZTC Funding allocation ($10K) is to purchase streaming video (or DVDs as necessary) RESERVES Faculty can submit requests for required or recommended physical books or streaming video for specific courses in Summer or Fall 2024. BTW, they can continue to request eBooks for online or hybrid courses as usual, for which we will use our regular funds. PERMANENT RESERVES Faculty, Chairs, or department Admin personnel can submit requests for required or recommended physical books or streaming video for courses not yet listed or not assigned to instructors (i.e. materials listed on a syllabus). * Use the department name (e. g. Accounting) in place of the instructor’s name and the course information * Provide a department email contact in case we have questions * The books or videos will be listed under the department for several semesters, but can be assigned to a course any time as needed How to Submit Requests In order to meet the Tax-Levy deadline of April 5th for encumbrances, I ask that you distribute this information to your faculty so they can submit requests asap, by the deadline of March 29th. * They can use our standard E-Reserves Request<https://qc-cuny.libwizard.com/f/EReservesRequest> form, one item per form * We can purchase multiple copies of physical books, especially for courses with more than thirty students, or those with many sections I understand this is all quite rushed, but after some delays we are receiving the funds from CUNY just now. Colleagues, Please find attached the revised Syllabus Template. It replaces the syllabus template issued in 2022. It does not require changes to your syllabus apart from: * It no longer expects an Expanded Course Description under section A. * In section B, the language has been clarified. Student Learning Outcomes are the seven outcomes that apply across the GSLIS curriculum: these should appear in every syllabus. Course Learning Goals are unique to each class. Each class should have between two and four stated Course Learning Goals that relate to the topic of the course. For core classes (700, 701, 702, 703, 709, 710), these have been or will be set by the core course coordinators. If you are teaching an elective that does not have Course Learning Goals, please draft some and submit them to me for consideration by the Curriculum Committee. * Also in section B, Student Learning Outcome “D” in all syllabi should be changed to “Analyze and critically assess the design, implementation and results of research and apply them to information practice”. This new form of words was approved at the recent faculty retreat. * There is some additional guidance provided for section D.
