?Dear faculty and students, Professor Bill Gordh has shared some sad news about the passing of his wife Jenny. Attached is the announcement of her memorial service which took place last week. We had a memorial gathering on Saturday evening. She was suffering with lung cancer. Teaching, music and storytelling remain passions so it will be nice to continue my work with all of you. Dear Faculty, Every year NYLA offers a $1,000 tuition scholarship award in the form of the Dewey Scholarship. And every year, we have a difficult time finding an applicant. This is the easiest scholarship application form I have come across, so I ask for your help in encouraging students to apply. Thank you. Colleen From: Jeremy Johannesen <director(a)nyla.org> Date: Monday, September 3, 2018 at 8:26 PM To: Jeremy Johannesen <director(a)nyla.org> Subject: NYLA's Dewey Scholarship - Invitation for Your School to Participate Greetings Library School Deans, I am writing to encourage each of your schools to submit a nomination for this year’s Dewey Scholarship Award. The official deadline for students to submit their applications to you is September 30 – and the deadline for the Dean of each school endorses and advances just ONE nomination is Monday, October 15. (So long as your school’s nomination is submitted to NYLA by 10/15, you can accept applications from students to any date that you choose. The 9/30 deadline listed on the form is to encourage timely participation by those students who find the application form on their own.) The NYLA-Dewey Scholarship provides financial assistance to enable an interested and deserving student to pursue a Master’s Degree in Library Science at an ALA-accredited library school in New York State. The recipient of this award will receive approximately $1000.00 to cover tuition costs and related expenses. In addition, the winner will receive free attendance at the first NYLA Annual Conference to be held after the awarding of the scholarship (this includes ticket to the awards banquet). Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet the following requirements: 1. Be a full- or part-time student, or been accepted into an ALA-accredited library school or school of information science located in New York State. The winner must be matriculated in a library school by the time they receive award. 2. Students must have maintained at least a B average during the semester preceding the award and transcripts must be provided to receive payment. 3. The successful candidates are expected to work in a library or library system in New York State for at least two years upon graduation. 4. To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, both the student and the library school must be members of the New York Library Association. Award Consideration Factors Three major factors will be considered in awarding the scholarship: a) evidence of a commitment to a career in librarianship, b) demonstrated leadership ability, and c) scholarly excellence. The winner will be notified by December 1. The award will be made available in time for the student to meet the Spring term's tuition costs. The following people are excluded from applying for the NYLA-Dewey Scholarship: Board members, officers, employees or relatives thereof of the New York Library Association as well as board members, officers, employees and their relatives of the Lake Placid Foundation. The scholarship award will be issued to the student’s school, as a formal scholarship to be applied to tuition, fees or text books. Checks will be disbursed pending receipt of an official transcript from the Fall 2018 semester.
