Congratulations to Professor Andrew Jackson (Sekou Molefi Baako) on his retirement from Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center after 35 years of service!!! I second Professor Lawton’s comments about Professor Jackson’s many contributions to librarianship, his community, and the Graduate Library School. Prof. Jackson has served both as a long-term member of the GSLIS Advisory Board and as a well-respected and much-beloved adjunct faculty member and colleague. He also is an esteemed recipient of the GSLIS “Alumnus of the Year” award. Fortunately he will continue to share his wisdom and extensive experience with our students regardless of his retirement from Langston Hughes. Please note that we are bound to IT technology and we have some questions as well. * Can an email notice be sent to the student telling them the change of grade has been filed with the Registrar? Right now, it only seems they’re notified if the change of grade has been rejected. As a result, the vast majority of students contact the department to ask the status of their change of grade. That takes up lots of valuable staff and faculty time that might otherwise be unnecessary with a simple email alert. We also asked for this as we receive many inquiries we were told that it would be difficult to implement as there is a lack of email info in the system the college uses, Sharepoint. We would like to see the student email generated once we mark the process as complete but it would be a manual process as we would have to sign into CF to retrieve the data and then send and email for each grade change approved and processed. I will circle back with IT * Can the change of grade be processed by the chair and faculty using mobile devices? That would expedite the whole process, we believe. I believe it can. As long as the user can retrieve the email. Has anyone attempted without success? * Is it possible to send a weekly update to the department of all change of grades fully processed? Such a record would “close the loop” for them and be most helpful should any questions later arise. I believe there are reports in Sharepoint just not sure if the acad depts. Have access. We asked that the Acad staff be given such access and we would need to follow up. If we can generate, I cant see why we cant send periodically. Hope this helps and I will follow up. However, while we recognize the value of having a diverse workforce, we need to pay more attention to recruitment and retention activities that would yield better results in outreach and opportunities for underrepresented-excluded groups who wish to become part of the library profession. How can CUNY library leaders help develop an inclusive environment: one conducive to retention of a diverse workforce, starting with the role of Search Committees, to mentors within and outside the library, to diversity professional development for senior library faculty? Law School As the only New York City law library director who is not Caucasian, the presenter will discuss recruitment and retention of minority law librarians. Given New York’s diversity, we will explore ways to promote retention of minority law or academic librarians. Library School The presenter will offer some strategies for encouraging a more diverse population to apply for library school in general and Queens GSLIS in particular. First, we need to instill in members of our target population the value and feasibility of librarianship as a profession for people of color.
