Hello, QC Lissa has organized an Alumni event on Monday 26th (5:45-7:15). Although scheduling problems did not permit the event to happen at date/time reserved for the Curr Space, we hope that it is still not very inconvenient for you to encourage your students to participate. I will be sending a general email through GLISANN on Monday, but we would appreciate if you mention the event in your classes too. The event is entitled: Where are they now? Advice from GSLIS Alumni. Students are invited to bring questions for the panelists to answer as well as a CV or resume for them to look overThe speakers are: * Shauntee Burns-Simpson. Outreach Librarian for MyLibraryNYC. * Arlene Laverde. High school librarian at Townsend Harris High School and the librarian at Flushing YABC. * Corinne O'Connor, employed at Winthrop Group, Inc. as part of their Information & Archival Services Division. * Simone L. Yearwood. Head of Access Services and Resource Sharing Librarian at Queens College, as well as assistant professor at GSLIS. Evidently as much as your lecture time allows you, I would encourage you to invite and allow your students to participate in this event. We all have worked to try to increase the number of opportunities for students to get career advice. For example, 701 and 702 have dedicated lectures and guest events to this topic and in the past we have coordinated events with QC LISSA to bring panels of professionals that can inform students about "the real world of LIS employment." ??Students and Faculty, We are very fortunate to be hosting Dr. Kirsten Weld (Assistant Professor of History, Harvard University) for a guest lecture on Thursday November 5th at 6pm at Rosenthal Library. Dr. Weld will give a talk titled "Resurrecting Paper Cadavers: Archives in Postwar Societies," based on her first book Paper Cadavers: The Archives of Dictatorship in Guatemala. This event is co-sponsored by GSLIS, the Department of Special Collections and Archives, and the Latin American and Latino Studies Program, as well as the Pine Tree Foundation. We hope to hold a second lecture in Spring 2016 as part of a series on "Archives and Society." Her research centers on the 20th-century history of political and ideological conflict in the Americas, particularly during the region's long Cold War, as well as on the politics of historical and archival knowledge production. Her first book, Paper Cadavers: The Archives of Dictatorship in Guatemala<https://www.dukeupress.edu/Paper-Cadavers/>, was published by Duke University Press in 2014. It is a historical and ethnographic study of the archives generated by Guatemala's National Police, which were used as tools of state repression during the country's civil war, kept hidden from the truth commission charged with investigating crimes against humanity at the war's conclusion, stumbled upon and rescued by justice activists in 2005, and repurposed in the service of historical accounting and postwar reconstruction. Paper Cadavers is a broad meditation on how history is produced as social knowledge, on the labour behind transformative social change, and on the stakes of the stories we tell ourselves about the past.
