Dear Colleagues, Please note that the Curriculum Space on APA Style on Tuesday, 9-13-11 will be held from 5:45 to 7:15 in a location yet to be determined. (The President's Conference Room unfortunately is already booked). This introduction to APA Style, with an emphasis on citations and references is especially important for students in 701, or for those in required core courses who have no previous experience with the 6th edition of the APA Style Manual. We will be sure to let you know as soon as the location is finalized. All classes starting at 3:55 will end early (just before 5:45), and 6:40 classes will start late (7:15), so that all interested students and faculty can attend. Curriculum Spaces are offered four times a semester, one each on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, to allow us to offer special events outside of regularly scheduled classes. We are also very pleased that Mr. John Trounski of the Writing Center will be speaking about services offered by the QC Writing Center, and the importance of good writing. We hope to see you! Drs. Many of us have witnessed first-hand the consequences of state disinvestment in public higher education over the past three decades. Most American public university systems, such as California, Wisconsin, and Illinois, have had dramatic cutbacks in academic programs and student services. Here at the City University of New York (CUNY), we have gone from a tuition-free system as late as 1976 to one that receives over 45% of its operating budget from student fees and tuition. The percentage of the operating budget covered by tuition and not public investment is expected to grow over the next five years as a result of tuition increases structured into the state budget. At the conference, we will be discussing these and other issues especially salient to the growing crisis of public higher education and more specifically to CUNY.
