Subject: Reminder: English Matters Puzzle Contest - English Department

Hello English majors/minors!

We would like to remind you that submissions for the English Matters puzzle contest are due Tuesday, June 1st. The winner’s puzzle, picture, and bio will be included in the next issue of English Matters, and a cash prize of $75 will be awarded. If you need assistance creating a puzzle, there are several puzzle tools you can use if you Google “puzzle generator”. The English department does not endorse any puzzle software so please take caution when using software on the internet.

Guidelines:

Puzzles must reference literature

1 puzzle on 1 page (8 ½ x 11 paper)

Submit your name and Cuny ID with your puzzles

Send an answer grid to all puzzles submitted.

Puzzle Type (a few ideas but not limited to those listed):

Anagrams - submit a set of letters for readers to create as many words as possible from those letters.

Cryptograms - each letter is substituted either for a different letter or a symbol. Include clues to help readers piece together what the correct letters might be to form the hidden word or phrase.

Crossword - a grid of squares and numbers, which readers fill in as they play based on clues along the side of the page. Usually, these clues are definitions or uses of the word readers are trying to guess.

Letter Arrangement - readers are tasked with creating words from 9 letters.

Rebus - printed words, pictures, or symbols arranged in a way that acts as a clue to the solution. Example: sou (split pea soup)

Word Jumbles - a random looking arrangement of letters that readers have to re-arrange into a proper word.

Word Search - a square grid of letters, usually with a series of clues or a theme. Readers have to try to locate those words within the grid.

Have fun!

Sincerely,

The English Department
