Dear English majors and minors, we are holding an information seminar on Monday, October 5 at 12.30pm on applying to graduate programs. The link for our meeting is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88972723531 You will hear from Prof. Caroline Hong about applying to the English MA and Accelerated MA program; Prof. Nicole Cooley about applying to the MFA program in Creative Writing, and Profs. Weingarten and myself about applying to PhDs and other related programs of interest to English majors. After brief presentations from us, there will also be a Q&A session. This October 9, building on four successful previous conferences, The Nation is bringing together the next generation of independent journalists to learn more about social movements and how journalists can better cover them through rigorous reporting, historical context, and a sense of mission. Speakers include Katrina vanden Heuvel, Melissa Harris-Perry, Ken Klippenstein, Zoë Carpenter, Mark Hertsgaard, Elie Mystal, The Intercepts’s Liliana Segura, and Teen Vogue‘s Allegra Kirkland, among many others. The conference is free for all accepted applicants. The day will feature workshops, panel discussions, breakout sessions, video screenings, networking opportunities, and a subscription to The Nation. We’d be grateful if you can help spread the word to anyone you know might be interested. All currently matriculating undergraduate and graduate students are eligible, as are International students. Young writers of traditional college-age not in school and recent graduates are also encouraged to apply. Recent college graduates will also be considered. Dear students, Please see below for information about the internships workshop being offered by Prof. Jason Tougaw on Wednesday, Sept 23, 12.30pm-1.15pm. A zoom link will be sent out early next week. In the English Department<http://english.qc.cuny.edu/> at Queens College, we are dedicated to helping students discover and pursue a variety of careers. People often ask, "What can you do with a degree in English?" The answer is that many industries are interested in recruiting students who think critically, write well, communicate effectively, have experience in digital media, and are attuned to the global or intercultural perspectives employers need in the twenty-first-century workplace. The current job market is complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic-no question. But there is hope. A variety of employers are finding creative ways to provide internship opportunities and hire new employees. For example, small organizations are setting up workspaces to accommodate physical distance guidelines. Other organizations are offering remote positions. Given the severe impact of the pandemic on the borough of Queens, The English Department and Queens College consider it more important than ever to help students prepare for and find internship and employment opportunities. Professor Jason Tougaw, English Internship Coordinator, will facilitate a workshop to help students think about how to find internship opportunities and take advantage of college resources to help them prepare for the application and interview process.
