Dear English majors and minors, I'm excited to announce our first speaker for the English Majors Seminar Series on Decolonizing the Curriculum! Shanna Benjamin, Associate Professor of English at Grinnell College will give a short talk and Q&A on Thursday, November 12 from 12:15- 1:30 pm. Zoom link is here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88234573515 Professor Benjamin will be discussing her forthcoming biography of Nellie McKay, who was a prominent and trailblazing scholar of African American literature. McKay also received her BA in English from our department in 1969, and Professor Benjamin will be sharing some of that history. It is not an easy task to reframe learning for your students, but we know you are pushing through and doing your best. We are the Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP) team and we are excited to be reaching out to you all. As college professors and staff/administration, we know that you are all an integral part of your student's success as they prepare to dive into their respective industries and begin their careers. For that reason, we wanted to reach out to let you know about an exciting fellowship opportunity fordiverse college juniors, college seniors, graduate students, and portfolio school students: MAIP. Since 1973, the MAIP Program, now in its 47th year, provides diverse students with equitable access to the advertising and marketing industry. This past summer, we transitioned to the MAIP Virtual Engagement Program in response to COVID-19.MAIP fellows participated in a 12-week virtual engagement program where they had the opportunity to connect with 90+ participating agencies/industry partners through transferable skill trainings, discipline-specific trainings, and more. Fellows also participated in summer projects and the 4A’s Foundation provided $25,000 in cash prizes to the top 2 teams. Whether it’s virtual or in-person, we are excited to let you know that our #MAIP2021 applications are currently open. Applications will close on October 31st, 2020 (11:59 pm ET). Fellows will have a paid internship in the advertising industry coupled with the amazing experience we provide them as a MAIP fellow. The goal is to continue providing fellows the space and opportunity to build a foundation for their careers. Program Breakdown: • Virtual Spring Training o Fellows engage in a 12-week virtual training series on topics within the industry intended to prepare fellows for their agency experience • MAIP Coach o Industry professionals volunteer to coach a fellow throughout their MAIP experience. Fellows are pair with their coaches based on location, agency/organization, or discipline • Internship Program o Fellows complete a 10-week internship with some of the top advertising agencies across the country • MAIP Labs o Agencies across the country volunteer to host workshops in the evening to contribute to fellows’ professional growth and development. • The Face of Talent o Fellows attend a week-long series of workshops, panels, and a career fair to celebrate their MAIP experience and network We welcome all students who have a passion for advertising to apply (regardless of their major) but would appreciate it if you could share the opportunity with students who are in any of the following majors/programs: marketing/advertising/mathematics/computer science/communications/graphic design/art. Attached in this email is the flyer, the Zoom information, and a short biography of who Celia is. Celia Ellenberg joined Vogue in 2015 as its beauty director, overseeing the direction of the magazine’s skincare, haircare, fragrance, makeup, and wellness coverage. Prior to this, Ellenberg was an editorial consultant, spearheading content and curation projects for brands such as Estee Lauder, NARS Cosmetics, L’Oreal Luxe, and the iconic Paris department store Le Bon Marche while holding contributing beauty editor titles at both WSJ Magazine and Net-A-Porter's Porter Magazine. Her experience spans both the print and digital worlds; In 2008, she notably launched Style.com<http://Style.com>’s beauty channel, Beauty Counter, which she ran for five years.
