The American Geographic Society (AGS) is the oldest geographic learning society in the United States dedicated to the advancement of geographic thought, knowledge, and understanding. AGS carries out funded research projects, supports education and teacher development, funds scholarly research, promotes geography through white papers and online geographical context behind the news, and publishes outstanding geographical journals, The Geographical Review and the newly reconstituted online journal, Focus on Geography. Our scholar-internship program offers students the opportunity to help AGS spread geographical awareness through social media, blogging, and events throughout the year. While a background in geography or geospatial science is a plus, we are looking for students interested in gaining experience in communications, social media, graphic design, and web development. The internship is 15-hours per week for 15 weeks beginning in mid-January. Students will receive a stipend to travel from universities within the NY-metro area, and a scholarship and student membership to AGS upon completion of the internship. [Englishstudents] NEW: Spring Course on Writing Comics, ENGL 303W

Dear students, I do hope these final weeks of the semester are wrapping up well. We are nearly there! I wanted to let you know about an exciting course we are offering in Spring 2020 with a visiting Professor, Josh Neufeld, on reading and writing graphic novels. Prof. Neufeld is an award-winning cartoonist and journalist, and his course will focus on non-fiction comic works. He is only with us for one semester, so we won't be able to offer this course again in the near future. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about comic books and comic creation from one of the best artists in the field. Even if you are interested in creating fiction comics, this is still a really amazing chance to refine your skills. No artistic talent is necessary! Just bring your paper and pencils and a curious mind. It is on Wednesday nights, 6:40pm-9:30pm (course code 26996). The prerequisite for the course is ENGL 211W, but if you have taken ENG 210W, I will waive this prerequisite. Dear Students, If you are interested in applying to graduate school, I encourage you to attend the IRT (Institute for the Recruitment of Teachers) info-session to learn more about how they can help! The info-session is being held on Wednesday December 4, 12:15-1:15pm in Powdermaker Hall, Room 104. See the poster, attached, for details. The IRT is a competitive graduate school prep program that helps students of color and other students committed to social justice and diversity, apply to MA or PhD programs within the field of Education, Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. They work with a consortium of over 40+ institutions<https://www.andover.edu/about/outreach/irt/irt-consortium> who provide their students with application fee waivers while in-house they provide year-long one on one advising and support throughout the graduate school process. There is no application fee or security deposit to their program. Participation is free of charge. 62% of IRT applicants identify as first gen and 61% identify as coming from a low-income background. Currently, the program is assisting two Queens College seniors who are both English majors applying to PhD English programs. The IRT mission is to empower talented underserved and underrepresented future educators to teach and serve as leaders in Education (as college professors, deans, administrators, college advisors, high school counselors, K-12 teachers, principals, etc.). They accept applications from professionals in the field, people who already have a master's degree or are currently enrolled in a master's program, recent graduates, and undergraduate juniors and seniors.
