Hi everyone, Just wanted to share this research seminar happening Friday which features two of our wonderful MA alumni: Vandeen Campbell and Birunda Chelliah! ________________________________ From: Office of Policy Research Seminar <OPR-SEMINAR@LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU> on behalf of Colin Chellman <Colin.Chellman@CUNY.EDU> Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2025 8:50 AM To: OPR-SEMINAR@LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU <OPR-SEMINAR@LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU> Subject: THIS FRIDAY, Mar. 28 // Campbell, Britton, and Chelliah: Gateway Course-taking During High School and College Academic Momentum in NYC // CUNY Higher Education Research Seminar Colleagues – The next seminar in our spring 2025 Higher Education Research Seminar Series features Vandeen Campbell (Rutgers University, Newark), Tolani Britton (UC Berkeley), and Birunda Chelliah (CUNY OAREDA): THIS FRIDAY, March 28, 2025, at Noon Vandeen Campbell (Rutgers University, Newark), Tolani Britton (UC Berkeley), and Birunda Chelliah (CUNY OAREDA) Out of the Gate: The Relationship between Gateway Course-taking During High School and College Academic Momentum in New York City Dual enrollment (DE) studies to-date have not explicitly explored whether and how DE helps students achieve academic momentum milestones that matter for progression toward on-time college degree completion and there remains a need to understand the role of DE course-taking for boosting momentum. Our study explores the relationship between DE math and English gateway course-taking and academic momentum milestones and indicators – earning 30 credits by the end of the first year, first year credit accumulation, and persistence to the third semester The study is based on a sample of college-credit eligible students in the College Now DE program based at the City University of New York (CUNY) and studies the outcomes for a subsample which subsequently enrolled at CUNY. We find that taking gateway courses has a positive relationship with credit momentum but had no relationship with persistence to the third semester. We also explore how these relationships differ by race/ethnicity and gender and found a boost in academic momentum for Black/African American students who took a DE gateway math course. Given the restricted sample, results will be especially relevant to cities or states with policy environments having a strong institutional link between the public K-12 and higher education systems. The seminar will be held remotely from noon – 1:00pm.
