American Association for Public Opinion Research

Journal Scholars Exchange (JSE)

The American Statistical Association (ASA) and the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) have collaboratively developed the Journal Scholars Exchange (JSE), a structured spring semester program designed to prepare the next generation of researchers for careers in the professional, industrial, and academic fields. This program offers college students the opportunity to receive mentorship, engage in professional development, and learn presentation best practices.

The spring semester consists of two meetings aimed at equipping students with essential soft skills that will support their transition to the next stage of their academic and professional journey.

Meeting Blueprint (90 minutes):
  • First 60 minutes focuses on interactive programming, including networking, mentoring, and career-building activities such as resume enhancement and optimizing social media presence for career success.
  • Back 30 minutes allows students the opportunity to present research in any format in front of mentors who will provide growth focused feedback.
  • Sign-ups are accepted on a rolling basis, as students are accepted they will be sent an email notification along with a LinkedIn group space link as a participation hub.

Eligibility: Applicants must be students studying a data-science, or adjacent, degree at time of participation. Participants will receive a one-year student membership to both ASA and AAPOR, granting them access to the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology for the duration of the program.

Early Spring Cohort
  • First Meeting: March 4th (90 minutes) - Nontraditional Career Paths
  • Second Meeting: April 4th (90 minutes) - AI in the Field
