Our study explores the relationship between DE math and English gateway course-taking and academic momentum milestones and indicators – earning 30 credits by the end of the first year, first year credit accumulation, and persistence to the third semester The study is based on a sample of college-credit eligible students in the College Now DE program based at the City University of New York (CUNY) and studies the outcomes for a subsample which subsequently enrolled at CUNY. We find that taking gateway courses has a positive relationship with credit momentum but had no relationship with persistence to the third semester. We also explore how these relationships differ by race/ethnicity and gender and found a boost in academic momentum for Black/African American students who took a DE gateway math course. Given the restricted sample, results will be especially relevant to cities or states with policy environments having a strong institutional link between the public K-12 and higher education systems.
