[DataAnalyticsMAProgram 0221] Consider taking DATA 790: Queens Data Lab
by Peter Ore 11 Dec '24

11 Dec '24
Hi All, I'm offering a new course next semester you might be interested in: "Queens Data Lab." In the course, we'll get practice doing practical analysis of data from the Queens Public Library, helping the library understand its own operations and possibly help improve their services. Besides getting practical experience, it should also give you another line on your resumé and help you make some connections with the community. Some of the projects could be extended over the summer through internships or in the form of MA papers. It's on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:20 in PH 302. See the course description below or email me for more info. Hope to see you there! Peter DATA 790/SOC 381W: Queens Data Lab In this course for intermediate to advanced data analytics students, we will apply data analysis and social research to questions posed by real organizations in the Queens College community. In consultation with a non-profit, public service organization, the class and instructor will (1) gain access to some version of the organization's database and (2) define a set of analytic tasks to undertake individually or in small groups throughout the semester. Typical tasks will include gathering, labelling, and structuring data; performing and automating analytical tasks; cleaning and reconstructing "dirty" data; and more. Through practice and instruction, students will gain skills for working effectively in research organizations, including oral and written presentation, literate coding, and sound file management strategies. Above all, students will consider the ways knowledge might better serve their community. Discimus ut serviamus.
