The members of the CUNY Academy for the Humanities and Sciences hope that you and your friends, family, and colleagues have weathered the storm without loss or damage. Our sympathies go to those who are suffering for lack of power, transportation, and housing
and all the other things that have been interrupted or are in short supply.<br>
<br>
Because our program continues on Monday with a speaker flying in from outside the country, we must now announce this and the other events for November.
<strong>The first of these is next Monday, November 5</strong>. <br>
<br>
In addition to these events, the Academy is pleased to announce the <strong>award solicitations for the William Stewart Travel Awards for new Assistant Professors and the Feliks Gross Award competition for Assistant Professors</strong> . Please see

1.. Cosponsored by the GC Program in History and the Center for the Humanities, the Academy presents
<strong><span style="background:white">Jan-Philipp Reemtsma of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research</span>,</strong> who will speak on his new book,
<strong>Trust and Violence</strong>. This is on <strong>Monday, November 5, 2012</strong> at 6:00 PM, in the Graduate Center's Segal Theatre. Prof. Richard Wolin will host this event. Please see

2. At the Academy's Feliks Gross Seminar on Urban Ethnography, <strong>Judith N. Desena, St. John's University</strong>, and
<strong>Timothy Shortell, Brooklyn College</strong> , will present their anthology "<strong>Brooklyn Studies: Gentrification, Immigration, and Ethnic Politics in a Global City</strong>"
<strong>Jerome Krase, Brooklyn College</strong> will speak on his book "<strong>Seeing Cities Change: Local Culture and Class</strong> ". Prof. Krase will host this event. This will be on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 6 PM in the Graduate Center's Room 9205<br>
<br>
3. With the Society for the Study of Renaissance Women, the Academy will co-sponsor a talk by
<strong>Caroline Bicks, English, Boston University</strong>, on "<strong>Stages of Girlhood in Early Modern England"</strong> in the Graduate Center's Room 9207 on Thursday, November 15 at 6 PM. Prof. Susan O'Malley will host this event.<br>
