[Socrates] Seeking Faculty Volunteers for the Fulbright Application Review Committee

It's that time of year again, when students are excitedly making plans for their postgraduate experiences. This year, following our 6-part series on Fulbright, we have an unprecedented 80 students express their interest in the Fulbright program, and 30 already at the drafting stages of the essays. These students reflect a variety of majors, including psychology, biology, art, sociology, economics, early childhood education, linguistics, and many others.


I am writing to request your support in preparing our students to submit competitive applications. Would you be willing to serve on the Fulbright application review committee?


The committee evaluates the merits of the applications and determines the campus ranking of students. Part of this work includes formulating/developing the campus review strategy. I would anticipate volunteers might receive 1 or 2 applications to review. Applications include: 1) a personal statement and statement of grant purpose, 500 words each; 2) biographic date, 3) 3 letters of recommendation, 4) and a language evaluation form. The applications will take approximately 15-20 minutes to read and evaluate. Evaluations are made based on the strength of the application, and a student’s capacity to demonstrate their fit for a particular Fulbright country. The committee will meet once, for approximately 1 hour, between September 1st and September 30th.


Though you may be assigned an application outside of your discipline, your research and grant writing experiences would be, nevertheless, extremely beneficial to students. Truly, one of the pleasures of serving on the Fulbright committee is meeting and interacting with some of the brightest and most talented students on the campus.
